Lent is a time of grace – a good time to meditate on ‘grace’. Grace is favor, the free and undeserved help that God gives us (CCC1996). All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to Himself, by the ‘saving’ cross of Jesus; saving us from the powerful grip of sin. Unfortunately, the world today seems to have lost the sense of sin. This month we focus on prayer based on a scriptural Way of the Cross (used by Pope Benedict XVI last year and prepared by an Indian, Thomas Menamparampil, S.D.B., Archbishop of Guwahati) – We focus on a few stations each week, praying for a renewed abhorrence to sin. FIRST STATION: Jesus in agony in the Garden of Olives. We pray that when faced with the choice of good and evil, we may have the grace to die to self and choose in line with the Father’s Will

The Church in Mumbai, light to the nations and the glory of God’s Holy People – Vision Statement, Archdiocese of Bombay, Synod 2000. As we focus our prayers this month for our city, we pray that Jesus Christ will be the Rock on which Mumbai is built. We pray that the Catholics in Mumbai will be salt and leaven, bringing the light of Christ to our city. Today is also the concluding day of the Catholic Apologetics Convention. May the Holy Spirit sustain and empower our Catholic faithful in a renewed love for the Word and the Church

Feast of The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. We pray, as we commence this New Year, for a heart and attitude like our Blessed Mother. May we follow her example throughout this year, keeping God’s Word at the center of our hearts – ever open and ever obedient to His Holy Will. We consecrate the year ahead to her and pray the three Hail Mary’s devoutly seeking Mary’s intercession and protection in 2010. Pray that it be a year of abundant blessings for the Church, our priests, religious and laity and for each of us. Our prayer focus this month is the Holy Father’s missionary intention – the key thrusts being Christian Unity and Proclamation

This month we travel to the manger. Step by step. But not only in prayer, but also action. We replace the coldness of the night that welcomed the Christ Child and the coldness of humanity that closed its doors on Him, with the warmth of the love He has poured into our hearts. We take one step a day towards the manger, bringing Him our simple gifts – our prayers and acts of love. Today, World Aids Day, we pray for all those abandoned due to the dreaded disease. Step for today: Visit/call a person affected by AIDS or any incurable disease

All Saints’ Day – In the early Church, Christians would celebrate the anniversary of a martyr’s death for Christ (known as the saint’s “birth day”) by serving an All-Night Vigil, and then celebrating the Eucharist over their tomb or the shrine at their place of martyrdom. Today as we remember all the saints, known and unknown, we pray through their intercession, that the testimony of love offered by them may fortify us Christians in our devotion to God and neighbor, imitating Christ who came to serve and not to be served

Feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor, Patroness of the Missions. Saint Therese of the Child Jesus preferred the anonymity of the cloister. She never went on missions; never founded a religious order, never performed ‘great works’. In the brief 24 years that she lived on this earth, her graces touched the lives of so many. She was devoted to simplicity and the accomplishment of small duties, in the service of God. Let us ask God to give us the grace to offer up all the things we do during the course of the day, however small and insignificant they may be, for the salvation of the world and the strengthening of His Church here on earth. This month we focus our prayers for our city and missionary work here and everywhere, that we in Mumbai may be true witnesses to the saving work of Jesus

Pope Benedict XVI has declared June 2009 to June 2010 as the ‘Year for Priests’. And so this month, in which we celebrate the 150th death anniversary of St. John Mary Vianney, the patron of priests, we focus our intercession to pray for our priests. Today the church celebrates the feast of St Alphonsus Ligouri. We pray for priests of the congregation he founded, the Redemptorists, who boldly preach and teach, especially through parish missions. Pray that they are empowered by the Holy Spirit with the charism specially in our times to reach hardened and rebellious hearts thereby bringing reconciliation in family life

Gen 1:2-3 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light
This month we focus our prayer for the Church in the world, especially our sisters and brothers persecuted for their faith. Today, we pray for Christians in Pakistan who face severe opposition from militant Islamic groups, including imprisonment, torture and even death. Many Pakistani Christians have been falsely accused of blaspheming the prophet Mohammed or the Quran, a crime punishable by death. Christians are regularly barred from jobs or face troubles from their employers and co-workers. Christian merchants are often harassed. Pakistani Christians are seen as being a part of an attack on Islam because of the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan. We lift up these situations. May God grant to those imprisoned for their faith, the grace to know His presence and faith to preserve in the midst of their sufferings. We pray for protection for Christians facing intimidation.. We also pray that the Spirit of God would transform the chaos and darkness to a thirst for the living God through the light of the Gospel.

2 Chr 7:14 If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
We lift up our State of Maharashtra, meaning the great land, with its diverse cultures and a modern cosmopolitan outlook. As we celebrate today the formation of our statehood, may we first thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed on us. Let us pray that the light of the Gospel would penetrate the hearts of those in darkness, remove the shackles and break the bonds of those under oppression, give hope to those under the yoke of superstition and ignorance, and bring peace to those who are troubled and in pain. As we celebrate ‘International Workers Day’ today let us thank God for all those individuals and various social organizations in the 1800’s that fought against the inhumane conditions and long working hours. Let us pray for workers all over the world who have been hit by the recent recession that they would find new hope as they put their trust in Christ
